Bengals trade Marquis Flowers to New England
    Jim Owczarski, jowczarski@enquirer.com

There is something about the back end of the Cincinnati Bengals roster that intrigues the New England Patriots, as the defending Super Bowl champions have once again gone to the Queen City to find a potential playmaker.

The Enquirer learned through multiple league sources that the Bengals sent reserve linebacker Marquis Flowers to the Patriots for a seventh-round pick.

Flowers, 25, was a sixth-round pick of the Bengals in 2014 out of Arizona. He played in 16 games and made one start in his rookie year, but missed all of 2015 with a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason.

Last year, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 245-pound linebacker returned to also play in all 16 games, mostly on special teams.

He was a bubble player this year, but a spot seemed to have opened up with the looming five-game suspension for starter Vontaze Burfict.

Now, it looks like there is room for undrafted free agent Hardy Nickerson.

As for the Patriots, Flowers becomes the third Bengal in two years to find his way to Foxboro. Running back Rex Burkhead signed there as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. In November, the Patriots signed tight end Matt Lengel off the Bengals' practice squad.

Patriots fullback James Develin, who was re-signed to a 2-year, $2.85 million deal this March, spent the 2011 season the Bengals practice squad.
potential targets for Bengals #1 overall pick in 2018:
QB's- Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Mason Rudolf
OT's- Orlando Brown, Connor Williams, Mike McGlinchey

I guess getting a 7th round draft pick for a guy likely to be cut is a good deal for the Bengals...but it makes me wonder why the Patriots felt a need for such a minimal-impact player.

"Yep, all we need is one more special teams guy and we're back to the super bowl!"

Actually, the Pats have been desperately looking for a replacement for Rob Nickovich who retired. Not surprising to me. On the other hand, were we a day late and a dollar short? Pats released Kony Easly after getting him in the off season. Why didn't we trade straight up for him. He could have moved inside to play next to Geno.

The Pats are constantly making moves and they take a lot of 'flyers' mostly due to their overall level of confidence in finding and coaching players. Flowers may not even make their roster and they will just say 'oh well' whereas Mikey, if he spent a 7th on a player would make sure he made the team.

This is the trade that they should make

Still need to replace Nelson and Williams is not that guy.

Reaction from one of the New England boards "Are we the only team in the league that will make trades for special team players? No stone left unturned. Is there any upside to this guy other than special teams?"

Some scuttlebutt that this was partially due to Flowers hitting Driskel too hard during practice a few weeks ago...after ML specifically told the defense not to touch any QB at all.

i think flowers was on the edge with all the DB wr talent they want to keep anyway.

If the Pats go to the Super Bowel (as usual), their 7th rd. pick is the last pick in the draft.

Yep...that's one pick ahead of the free agent free-for-all.

No it is not the last pick in the draft. The last pick is a compensatory pick in the 7th round.
