    Ravens' Cody fails conditioning test

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5413427

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens second-round draft pick Terrence Cody failed his conditioning test Tuesday and was not permitted to participate in the team's first training camp practice.

The 360-pound defensive tackle out of Alabama signed a three-year contract Monday and arrived at McDaniel College eager to launch his NFL career. But after flunking his physical, he was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP).

"Part of our process is everybody's got to pass the conditioning test to be sure they're ready to compete," coach John Harbaugh said after Tuesday's practice. "It's going to be hot out here, our practices are fast. We've got to be sure guys are physically ready to practice at the pace we're practicing at.

"So, when he passes the conditioning test, he'll practice."

Years ago, Cody weighed over 400 pounds. After falling to the second round on draft day, he said, "I felt it was my weight and stuff that dropped me to this late."

And now, his NFL career will get off to a late start.

"I'm not surprised. Every year certain guys struggle with that," Harbaugh said. "Guys learn there's a certain level of expectation in terms of conditioning that goes with being an NFL player, especially for this team. So he's going to have to get himself in the type of shape he needs to be in."

Cody was drafted 57th overall by the Ravens. Baltimore's other second-round pick, linebacker Sergio Kindle of Texas, fractured his skull while falling down a flight of stairs last week and will probably miss the entire camp.

Ten players are currently on Baltimore's PUP list: Cody; safety Ed Reed; cornerbacks Fabian Washington, Lardarius Webb, Prince Miller and Walt Harris; linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo; offensive tackle Oniel Cousins; running back Matt Lawrence; and wide receiver Rodelin Anthony.

Well, considering they didn't have a first-round pick, they went with what they could hope for. That hope comes with the pitfalls which a team hopes is rendered moot. Kindle--from some reports--fell down the stairs due to intoxication. Cody was well-known for weight and conditioning issues. A team takes their chances.

I wouldn't be too quick to laugh at the Rats here...they also have a history of turning less-than-stellar picks into Pro Bowlers.

Props for owning up to the fact that you may have missed the mark on Cody (as you say, so far....).

Yet, the Ravens are run-away favorites to win the Division according to all of the experts, ESPN's Power Rankings out today, Las Vegas betting odds, etc.

Place your bets, folks on the Bengals right now to win the Division. No easier money to be made in this economy.

    As of 1 minute ago....

    Baltimore Ravens
    -145

    Cincinnati Bengals
    +350

    Cleveland Browns
    +1800

    Pittsburgh Steelers
    +240

That's $3,500 (plus your $1K back) for every $1,000 you bet.

    Other Ravens out of shape....

    From Rotoworld:

Ravens placed FS Ed Reed (hip) on active/Physically Unable to Perform. No surprise here. Reed will be a candidate for the regular season PUP list and may miss the first six weeks of the season. He's joined on the training camp PUP list by NT Terrence Cody (conditioning), CB Walt Harris (conditioning), CB Lardarius Webb (knee), CB Fabian Washington (knee), LB Brendon Ayanbadejo (leg), OT Oniel Cousins (throat), RB Matt Lawrence (knee), and WR Rodelin Anthony (knee).

Here on the East coast we've had a nasty stretch of temperatures over 95, breaking 100 more times than I remember. They have to be ultra careful with a specimen like that.

Man Boobs ver 2.0. How can Alabama have such a good college program when they keep turning out fat tubs of goo. At least Andre Smith doesn't have to feel like a complete moron.

Ravens' Cody passes conditioning test — 10:10 a.m.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/L...ing-camps-July

Baltimore Ravens second-round pick Terrence Cody signed his four-year deal on Monday and then was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list on Tuesday for conditioning reasons. On Wednesday morning, Cody was removed from that list after passing the team’s conditioning test. After passing the conditioning test, undrafted free agent rookie CB Prince Miller was also removed from the list.

Several players were added to the Active-Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Tuesday: C Matt Birk (knee), FS Ed Reed (hip), CBs Fabian Washington (knee) and Lardarius Webb (knee), LB Brendon Ayanbadejo (quadriceps), RB Matthew Lawrence (knee).

OT Oneil Cousins (throat) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Illness list.

All of those players on each list are eligible to come off at any time. They will still count against the team’s 80-man roster whether they are on that list or not.

Ravens thought punking him like that would be motivational, nothing more. His "conditioning" didn't change that fast.

What Kind Of Conditioning Program Is Nick Saban Running At Alabama?

    http://network.yardbarker.com/colleg...labama/2947878

First it was Cincinnati Bengals tackle Andre Smith, now its Ravens defensive tackle Terrence Cody.

Cody was recently put on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list because he couldn’t pass the conditioning test in Baltimore and that leads me to question the conditioning and weight program that Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide football program have implemented.

Saban has been known to produce some quality NFL players but issues like this don’t make him look good at all. I wonder if high school football players considering Alabama are keep these two players in mind when it comes time to decide on a school to continue their football playing days.

Is Alabama preparing these guys to play in the NFL or just getting them ready from week to week so they could compete at a high level for the Crimson Tide?

There was a lot of noise made about Urban Meyer not getting former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow’s throwing motion NFL ready, how about Saban’s conditioning program?

Smith and Cody are two very good players that have been failed by the Alabama program. Even if the players refused to work out, Saban and the Alabama conditioning coach should be in their butts about keeping themselves in shape for the season and for the possibility of playing in the NFL.

    What is Nick Saban doing?

Thursday notes: T.O. to work; Smith sidelined for possibly three games

    http://www.bengals.com/news/article-...d-fa9dfdc2df36

SMITH OUT: A big surprise surfaced when the Bengals took the field Thursday morning with right tackle Andre Smith still on the sidelines and he revealed after the workout that he's shooting to play in the final two preseason games.

And there is a doomsday scenario. Head coach Marvin Lewis called it a foot as well as a conditioning isssue and said Smith wouldn't be cleared for two to three weeks at least. If his rehab doesn't go as planned, Lewis raised the option of not practicing him in the preseason and putting him on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), which would ice him six more weeks to start the regular season.

Smith, who missed all of the last camp in a rookie holdout, was one of five players not suited up. The Bengals had hoped the foot surgery that knocked Smith out of all of the spring workouts would be healed enough for him to line up in the first practice, but he said it's not there yet and they don't want to rush it. As for when he'll return to practice, he said "I'm taking it day by day."

Under hazy skies with a touch of a breeze, Lewis commenced his eighth Bengals camp in helmets and shorts. The team isn't expected to go full pads until one of Saturday's two practices.

Also not working were cornerback Leon Hall, left guard Evan Mathis, SAM linebacker Rashad Jeanty, and safety Tom Nelson. Hall apparently tweaked his back in a workout a few days ago and is expected to be out only briefly and could be back as soon as the weekend. Jeanty (leg) and Mathis (foot) are coming off surgeries.

Sources: Bryant has high ankle sprain

    http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl...ory?id=5424332

SAN ANTONIO -- Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant, the team's first-round selection, suffered a sprained right ankle near the end of practice and will undergo an MRI on Friday night to determine the severity of the injury.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said the prized rookie will miss some practice time. Jones expressed optimism that Bryant would not be sidelined much longer than a few days.

League sources, however, said Bryant most likely suffered a high ankle sprain, which would mean that Bryant would be out significantly longer.

The Cowboys' top three picks are injured. Second-round linebacker Sean Lee has been sidelined since Tuesday with a strained quadriceps. Fourth-round safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, who had shoulder surgery in March, has not been cleared to practice yet.

The injury occurred after cornerback Orlando Scandrick broke up a pass intended for Bryant on the second-to-last play of practice. Backup quarterback Jon Kitna threw the ball slightly behind Bryant on a crossing route, and Scandrick made a good play on the ball and landed on Bryant's leg.

Bryant, who the Cowboys selected with the 24th overall pick after trading up three spots in the draft, stayed down on the Alamodome turf for several seconds. He tried to limp off the field, then went back down before being helped off the field by athletic trainers Jim Maurer and Britt Brown.

"I hope he just sprained his ankle," Scandrick said. "He should be all right."

Bryant starred during the first several practices of training camp, making the Cowboys hopeful he could be a major contributor for a unit that was second in the NFL in total offense last season. He has made several spectacular plays and has displayed a decent grasp of the playbook despite missing a handful of offseason workouts with a variety of physical ailments.

"You don't like them to miss," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. "We do have an extra week [of training camp], which [Bryant] has taken advantage of, being here and learning all those things. He's actually done real well as far as assignments are concerned."

    Better holdout or (already) injuried?

I think we have less injuries on the rookies that sign early then the hold outs.

I am sure someone will throw some stats up on this

The only reason Alabama is pre-season #1 is because they were #1 last year. They lost a ton of talent on defense. The real pre-season #1 should be The Ohio State University. They are returning a lot of starters and oh BTW, they have Terrelle Pryor as a leading Heisman candidate and their 2 toughest games at home. As usual, Tressell is loaded to win ANOTHER Big 10 title with a trip to the BCS on the line.
Don't underestimate the power of the Dark Side!

I have read on many places that OSU will be rated # 1. They have a lot of returning starters. BTW, why would ML need to take the advice of a college coach to pick his player? Is it not his JOB to do his own research? Once again, where is the scouting staff? Typical BS excuses from ML!

I agree. Saban does not care about the NFL, other than how good it makes him look if his players go high in the draft.

The college game is a lot shorter and slower than the NFL game. Saban can win with these guys in college.

Also, the fact that the Bengals are miffed at Saban for his glowing report to them on Smith, shows how stupid the Bengals are. All high-priced pimp coaches will say whatever it takes to get their players drafted in the first round. That's how competitive recruiting has become. Think about how N.D.s former coach pimped Brady Quinn to his old buddy, Cleveland's H.C.

    They'll lie.

    Terrence Cody has knee surgery

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5516636

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh says Baltimore rookie Terrence Cody has had surgery on his left his left knee and will be sidelined for two weeks.

The procedure, performed last week to repair a torn lateral meniscus, leaves the nose guard questionable for the Ravens' season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 13.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says there's a chance Cody could be back for the opener, but says "for the bigger guys, sometimes it takes a little longer."

Harbaugh says the good news is the Ravens "have a lot of depth on the defensive line right now."

Cody had said last week that he didn't think he would need surgery to address swelling in his knee. The 6-foot-4, 349-pounder from Alabama says that he doesn't have a history of knee issues.
